  • From the World War II era, Prof. Ronald Berger retired from UW Whitewater, will tell of the experiences of his father and uncle during the Nazi occupation of Poland. His father was killed in a concentration camp and his uncle survived by pretending to be a Roman Catholic priest and by joining the Russian army. After uncovering their stories, Prof. Berger wrote the book, Children, Save Yourselves in which he invites us into the life of his family.

  • John Schmitt of Mt.Horeb is leading his fifth well drilling trip to El Salvador in 2019. He will be present his experiences in recruiting participants, transporting, housing and feeding them. We will learn about the people in small villages who benefit from having clean water wells in their towns and gain some understanding why so many from South America are seeking to come north.

  • Subject: Book Reviews:
    • Jerry – “The Map Thief” by Michael Blanding 
      The Map Thief is the account of a dealer in antique maps who betrays his calling and the scholarly community by stealing rare and irreplaceable maps from libraries and universities for his own profit.

    • The second book is “The Mascot“, the experiences of a young Jewish boy in World War II who watched as his family was shot and dropped into a pit by the Nazis, who wandered in woods for two years, then found by German soldiers and became their mascot. John and Don will share in presenting the story.

FBI Special Agent Michael Fitzgerald (retired), from Verona, will be a guest at Man-Talk on Tuesday November 13 at 10:00 AM. He will share some of the history of the FBI as well as his insights and personal experiences of his work.

Share in the excitement of an archaeological dig in Israel. Hold a Roman coin in your hand; grab the handle of a Byzantine pottery jug; look into an Arab oil lamp; inspect a piece of an Italian marble column. Artifacts and projected photos of Canaanite occupation from 3000 B.C. as well as from the Hellenist, Roman, Byzantine and Arab periods will be seen.

Accompany Donald Zelle and his digging partners at Caesarea, Israel as they attempt to locate the ancient main street constructed under Herod the Great from 22-4 B.C.

  • Subject: Smashing protons!

Men of Verona and surrounding area have an unusual opportunity to learn about smashing protons, colliding particles, black holes, and a new particle, recently discovered by accident.

Physicist Dick Loveless, Verona, a retired professor of UW, will address the men at their second meeting in September, on Tuesday the 25th at 10 a.m. at the Verona Senior Center.

Dr. Loveless has worked with the electron-proton collider at Hamburg Germany and also the underground Hadron collider at Geneva Switzerland, the largest and most powerful scientific instrument in the world. These colliders seek to find the secret of how the universe functions and holds together. It is the beginning of a new science that uses great amounts of energy to study  the building blocks of matter.
